Beauty Blunders: Zits, Blackheads, & Pimples Part 1

Dear Sparkly,
I have one of those gosh dang pimples in my nostril.  I freaking hate those.  It hurts every time I touch my nose!  How do I get it out?

-Zat The Zit

I feel your pain!  I have had to fight against my oily skin since I was young so I hope I can offer you some valuable insight and remedies.

First of all, pimples are simply pores filled with an excessive amount of dirt.  The dirt fills up the pore and then causes inflammation.  That is the painful, red area that you see on your skin.

The first thing you can do to help out your skin is to take certain preventative measures.  Wash your face twice a day.  Different skin types will need a different cleanser.  If you're skin is sensitive and pale (Fitzpatrick Type 1), then go for a mild cleanser that doesn't have exfoliants included.  If you're skin is medium colored then you can handle a stronger cleanser with some exfoliants.  Darker skin, depending on the tone can also handle stronger cleansers.

Next, you'll need an exfoliant that you can use 2-3 times a week.  This will help clean out the pores on your face and keep your skin clear.  *A good exfoliant will actually cause some break outs initially to properly cleanse your pores, so if you think "Oh my gosh!  My face looks worse!" don't fret, the exfoliant is doing what it needs to.

Something else to keep in mind, don't touch your face.  You have no idea how much dirt is on you hand, so be careful about transferring extra oils and dead skin when you're face is already dealing with all of that!

For immediate assistance with your pimple problem, my advice would be to either:
A)Use a hot wash cloth, press it gently against the inflamed area and bring the bacteria to the top
B)Find a cream that has salicylic acid and/or benzoly peroxide
Once the bacteria has reached the top of your skin (you'll see the whitehead), wrap your pointer fingers with Kleenexes and gently press the pimple until it pops.  I know, that seems gross.  Sadly, my favorite part of doing facials was extracting pimples.  Anyways, you'll need to press down until all the bacteria comes out and blood begins to come out.  Once you've done that, wipe away any stray bacteria from the skin.

If you're wanting some product recommendations here are mine:
Aveda
Burt's Bees (available at Target)
Mary Kay Microderm

If you have pimples under your skin regularly, then my advice would be to see a dermatologist for a medical grade chemical peel and a prescription cleanser.  Most of you, though, will not need such harsh chemicals to get a clean complexion.

Come back tomorrow for some great home remedies used to fight acne!
