Holiday Survival Guide: Valentine's Day

So I've been doing a lot of writing about dating, and I know that a good amount of you reading this blog are single.  Don't worry, I haven't forgotten that there are many people facing Valentine's Day as another holiday where they will be trying to just "make it through".

I'll let you in on a little secret, I've never had a boyfriend on Valentine's Day.  I've had them for birthdays, Christmas, New Year's, but never on Valentine's Day.  Does that bother me?  I'd be lying if I said "Absolutely not."  Of course there is that little twinge all of the singles get when they wake up on February 14th and think "I do not want to go to school/work/dinner/whatever because I'll be the only one who's single and I don't want people feeling sorry for me.  And I really hate watching everyone get flowers and chocolates."  If you're reading this and you just thought to yourself  "Wow, that's totally how I feel right now", then I hope that this list is of use to you:

1.  Do something with your friends.  Get all your single friends together and have dinner and see a movie.  They may not be someone you're in love with, but the love you share in friendships can last a lifetime.  Enjoy the time with them that you have, there will be fewer opportunities to hang out when you aren't single.
2.  Visit a nursing home.  What better way to share the love than by spending time with those who are older and wiser than you.  I've learned that seniors have all the answers, so go and hang out with them.  They love to talk about the "good ole days" with anyone willing to listen.
3.  Hit the gym.  You'll feel better on February 15th because instead of going out and having a huge dinner and eating lots of chocolates, you chose to burn some calories.  And while everyone else in the office will be in a chocolate coma, you'll be in a good mood.
4.  Paintball.  I attended a single's group a few years ago that had an annual paintball trip for Valentine's Day.  Nothing says "I love you" like causing your friends pain and bruising.
5.  Relax at the spa.  There's never a bad time to get a facial, massage, body treatment, or mani/pedi.  You'll be enjoying the treatment so much that you'll forget what the date even is.  And your body will love you for treating it so nicely.  Guys, don't shy away from any of those services.
6.  Shooting at the gun range.  Need I say more?

If you're not sure that Chivalry still exists, come back tomorrow and read the love story of my friends Joe & Renee.
