Reviving Chivalry: A's Story

from a female perspective...

The worst boyfriend I ever had was in high school, and he pretty much took the cake of doing everything you’re NOT supposed to do in a relationship and being labeled the ultimate jerk. Bob* and I dated off and on throughout high school, and we were each others first loves. In our senior year of high school, I was told by a friend after spending a week in the Dominican Republic on a mission trip that he had cheated on me with my best guy friend Rick* while I was gone because he said he “missed me too much and was lonely”. I didn’t want to believe that he would do something like that-especially with a man! So I decided to forget about it and keep going with the relationship.

Throughout our relationship, Bob was constantly telling me how stupid and worthless I was; he was always tearing me down and making me feel worthless. At one point, I don’t even remember what exactly I had said or done, but I said something that had upset him, and he slapped me. I should’ve left then.

A week later, one of my guy friends Joe* told me to come to his house, because he had a present for me before I went out of town on a vacation. When I got there, I discovered that he was home alone, and he tried to pull me into his bedroom and undress me. When I finally got away from the house, I immediately called Bob who was working in the same neighborhood. He simply said that I deserved it, and hung up on me. If only I could go back in time and shake some sense into past me. I still stayed with this jerk.

About 6 weeks later, we were just starting college at the same school. Everything was going really well, but then we started having some (more) problems. One day he had taken me to meet his dad (which was an extremely big deal for him), and afterward he was really eager to have this romantic date that evening. Once we started getting ready for a romantic night out, he told me he wanted to go smoke pot with his friends instead. A week after that, early in the morning I woke up with an incredibly sharp pain in my side. I didn’t want to go to the hospital alone, so I dragged Bob with me. He slept in the car in the parking lot, while my mom and step dad drove 40 miles to be at the hospital with me. In a week’s time, I was in and out of the hospital a total of 4 times. He only came into the hospital with me once. While I was resting back in my dorm room after the last time in the hospital, Bob told me that he wasn’t with me at the hospital because he was trying to get some girl to sleep with him. I finally had had enough, and I ended the relationship.

Sometimes, it’s really hard to believe that such a guy could even exist, but it’s taught me a very valuable lesson in loving myself, seeking God, and knowing how a true, Christian gentleman should treat a lady.
