from a male perspective....
One thing I have really made sure to do is start things off right. So I don't text or facebook message a girl to ask her out. I spend some time getting to know her, in a group, over the phone, that kind of stuff. I like to see how she acts around me and see if she's okay with me being interested. After a few weeks I decide if I want to ask her out. If I do, I either talk to her in person or over the phone. I let her know I'm interested in dating her and ask her out.
I like to have a plan, not just where we go or what we do, but I actually plan for those "just in case" scenarios. So if it's looking cloudy, I bring an umbrella. I try to make sure she knows how to dress before we go out, too.
Because we're just starting things, on a first date I typically do some kind of activity. Bowling, putt putt, games, you get the idea. That way we have something that gives us an initial bond and we can look back later and have some inside jokes. It also provides some time for me to break the touch barrier. If we're putt putting, I might touch the small of her back a little and help her with her swing.
After the activity, we'll have dinner and I'll continue to ask her questions about her likes and dislikes and family. I like to make sure to share the conversation so that we both get to know each other better. I don't want to hog the conversation.
When dinner is over, I walk her to her car, or take her home. She has the option, when I initially ask her out, if she'd like to meet at the date location or if she's more comfortable bringing herself. All girls are different in that way.
So, basically, I like to make sure we do something fun that we can later remember as a fun first date.
