Dear Sparkly,
How can I tell if a guy is interested in me?
-Reading Between The Lines
This is something women have been asking for centuries. How can we tell if a man is truly interested versus a genuinely "nice" guy. If you think you're alone in the quest for interpretation, I assure you- you're not! I've even had my days of asking a friend "What did it mean when he did that?"
One of the best indicators in telling whether or not a guy likes you is to have a friend observe his interactions with you. When you're involved in the situation it can be hard to read the appropriate signs and take everything in environmental context. Here are a few things to have your friends be on the look out for:
A. Preening aka "Peacocking"- the minute you enter the room, does he immediately adjust his shirt, finger comb his hair, or straighten up his posture?
B. If you walk up to the group of people he's talking with does his body point towards you? This can also be detected if you're not standing right next to him. If he's interested, he'll keep you in his line of vision.
C. Does he look at you more when you're talking to other guys?
D. Did his eyebrows flash when he first spotted you walk in the room? This can be harder to detect unless you have someone planted in the room, watching him watch you. The eyebrow flash is a micro expression and difficult to see if you're not paying close attention.
E. Do his pupils dilate when he's looking at you? When we see something we like our pupils get larger, but remember to take this into environmental context. Pupils dilate in low light areas, but can also become smaller in well lit places. So if his body is facing you and he's been touching his hair a lot but you're outside in the sun, don't decide he's not interested simple because of one thing.
F. Mirroring. Does he mimic your gestures? If you're sitting at a table and you move a hand under your chin, does he do that same thing within the next 2 minutes? If you have your arms crossed, does he do that immediately, as well?
Guys:
If you're reading this and wondering how to tell if a lady is interested in you, here are a few signs for you to see.
A. Does she compliment you?
B. Does she ask for your help on a specific thing she knows you're good at i.e., if you're a car guru did she ask for you to help her changer or oil?
C. Does she touch your arm frequently in conversation?
D. Do you see her look at you for more than 3 seconds before she looks away?
E. Has she offered to cook for you?
F. Does she play with her hair when talking with you?
G. Do her pupils dilate when you look at her?
H. Does she touch her lips when you're talking to her?
I. Does she mimic your gestures?
Now, as I said before, read things with environmental context. Only seeing one of the indicators doesn't mean that the person you're interested in is/isn't interested in you. But when you start to put together the body positioning, pupil dilation, arm touches, and smiles all together, then you're seeing a clear picture of someone who is interested. If you want to learn more about reading body language, I highly recommend the book "The Definitive Guide to Body Language" by Barbara and Alan Pease.
