Dear Sparkly,
I have broad shoulders and I'm tall. Finding a coat is really hard! What do I do?
-Can't Find That Perfect Fit
I feel your pain! I am a tall, broad shouldered woman, and this makes it very difficult for finding winter wear that fits properly. I know, today is the 1st day of March, so I'll probably have to repost this in the fall. Here are some of my tips:
Go Shop. It may be a whole day long excursion, but finding a coat that fits you well is worth the time and money. Don't rule out Burlington Coat Factory, either. Maybe they won't have a name brand coat for you, but they have a lot of great styles, and some things never go out of fashion. Seriously, trench coats? Those will always be en vouge. I would recommend staying away from online shopping in this instance.
*Look for something with a V-neck. Use deep armholes and raglan sleeves to soften shoulders.
Find a Tailor. Whether you're short or tall, having a good tailor will help in this situation. They will be able to extend the length of your sleeves, or bring the sleeves down a few inches, if that's what you need. Again, worth the money. A coat is something that should be an investment, as as long as you get one that's not following a trend, you'll be fine.
Don't Fear The Alternatives. This year I gave up on my coat. It's been hanging on the back of my bedroom door since December. I got so tired of putting it on when I am outside, taking it off at the car (because the shoulders are too small that I can't properly steer when I have it on), and always frustrated with the short length of the "long" sleeves, that I finally just gave up. I bought a wool shawl in January and have absolutely fallen in love. That thing goes everywhere with me, even church. I'm not kidding, it's very convenient to pull that out and lay it across my lap and the laps of my friends, as if it was a blanket. But the best thing it how warm I am when I wear it!
I hope that helps you on your journey to find a coat! Don't forget- many of them will be on sale in the next 6-8 weeks, so hit those stores for great deals!
