Just like a signature piece of clothing or accessory, having that perfect go-to dish is a very important part of good etiquette. Now, of course, this dish may evolve as you become more experienced in the kitchen, but having something uniquely yours in the culinary field will do as much for your reputation as your outstanding personality.
To decide what your signature dish will be means taking some time and figuring out what you enjoy cooking and can do without much notice, or even a recipe. If you've ever watched the show Hell's Kitchen, then you see numerous chefs preparing and serving a representation of themselves, on a plate. None of them use a recipe, and they know exactly how to cook each component of the dish. They spend hours, before filming the show, working on ever last detail of what they present to Chef Gordon Ramsey. Start with a simple recipe either from a family dish or a cookbook, and then make it your own.
The best part of having a signature dish is, if you did it right, how well it will stand out at a party. For a casual get together, I'm known to bring queso. I did learn the recipe from my mom, but, like I said, I put my own spin on the ingredients. When I bring in my red crock pot, everyone knows exactly what to expect. For a more formal event, like a dinner party, my dish is a Caesar Vinaigrette Chicken. The chicken dish I rarely make but it always gets rave reviews.
Now that you know the importance of making a signature dish you might wants some helpful tips on how to actually go about creating your own. Check out Ask Suzy for help with that!
