I'm constantly getting the question "What do you recommend for skin care or make up?" I often have a hard time recommending something "reasonably" priced because of how awful so many brands truly are. Here are some of the basics that you'd need to know before buying any cosmetics (including hair products, make up and skin care).
1) The United States does not have a pre-approve program that tests cosmetics before they are released to the public. Companies can put whatever they want in their products and don't have to worry about any strict regulations being enforced.
2) The United States has 3 banned substances... Europe has banned over 1000 substances they cannot put in cosmetics. Yup. If you want to see the difference between the U.S. and Europe you can check out this article.
3) The hazard rating on most of the products you are using is over a 3, which means you're damaging your skin. To see the rating of the products you're using, check out this site.
Some of you reading this are aware of how I have an awful taste in movies. One that I watch every once in a while is Catwoman, starring Halle Berry. If it's been a while since you've seen it, the main character uncovers the fact that the company who employs her is putting in extremely hazardous materials in their new anti-aging creme. At the end of the film, Halle Berry's Catwoman gets in a fight with the CEO of the company, played by Sharon Stone. Near the end of the fight, Catwoman scratches the CEO's face, revealing that the top layers of skin, while looking fresh and young, are just covering damaged skin. Using the wrong products will ultimately lead to your skin's detriment.
