The Adventures of Sparkly In The City: The Balcony Club

I recently decided to venture out to one of Dallas' jazz clubs.  I have always enjoyed the genre and wasn't very certain how to go about finding a place to hear some local talent.  After talking with a friend on Valentine's Day about the possibility of finding a jazz venue, I got on Google and Yelp to do my search.  I was very pleased to find that "Dallas's top jazz nightclub" was just a few minutes away from my house.  I put up a facebook invite and was joined on my adventure by a few friends, who seemed more than interested in going someplace different than where our crowd usually finds themselves on a Friday night.

The Balcony Club is conveniently attached to the Lakewood Theater, with the closest intersection being Abrams Rd and Abrams Pkwy.  There is plenty of parking, if not right in front of the theater, definitely all around the ajoining streets.  The Balcony Club has a visible sign, but be sure to take the stairs on the right, and not get detoured in the Arcade Bar below (I nearly made the mistake myself).  When you enter, the doorman will kindly take cash or a card for your cover charge.  I used my card and the doorman sent it directly to the bar for my tab.

I ordered a Chocolate Martini.  Now, I am not an alcohol aficionado so I cannot tell you whether it was wonderful or not.  What I can tell you is that I am for sure a Bloody Mary kind of gal and will not be spending another dime pretending to like martinis.  I may have also accidentally stolen a guy's seat at the bar (haha, true story, he came back from the restroom and I felt really bad and slightly embarrassed).  Once I had my $9 drink, I settled in at a table near the stage, ready to hear the band.

I was really thinking the band wouldn't be as loud, but because people were talking, I can understand the volume.  It wasn't horrible, but anyone who isn't a fan of loud music might want to bring some earplugs.  My friends showed up during the first song of the set, and we all enjoyed ourselves until about midnight.  It was easy to get lost in the environment and watch all the people inside.  One of our favorites to watch that evening was a man carrying around a Hello Kitty bag.  We never did find out the real reason, but we made up stories about it.  Yes, we are very easily entertained.

As for people there, it was a great mixture of ages and everyone seemed very relaxed and friendly.  The band was amazing, as was the vocalist.  There was a line of smokers outside, but that is expected, and didn't make our visit unpleasant at all.  It was a nice evening and a great way to unwind after a long week.  I hope to be returning soon!
